I am always taken aback when new clients are not sure about their credit score. Why should you care? In these difficult times knowing your credit score and how to better your score is essential, even if you are not ready to purchase a new home, or have already purchased one.
It’s a good practice to verify your credit information at the least, once per year. It’s also very easy; each credit bureau (Experian, Trans Union, Equifax) will provide you with a report free of charge, once per year. Visit (Annual Credit Report) where you can receive all three for free! Your credit score is included with the three bureau reports, and improving it can be as easy as reporting incorrect account information. In addition, if you paid off that auto loan early and it’s not reported…..well it goes without saying, report it!
I’m sure you have received various credit card offers in the mail stating you are eligible for this or that level card, but what you may not know is that if you improved your score, you could be eligible for the higher card, which affords you better benefits.
Now let’s compare this to purchasing a new home…..say you have a lower credit score, the mortgage company you are working with could ask you to put more money down or assess a higher mortgage rate. The long and the short of it, higher score, equals better financial benefits.
Use the quick links above to visit each of the credit reporting bureaus’ websites. You may be surprised at what you will find when you review your personal report, and as always, feel free to call or email me with any questions.
